Colorado Springs: History & Overview

About Mile High Youth Corps – Colorado Springs Field Office:

Mile High Youth Corps – Colorado Springs (MHYC-CS) is a field office of Mile High Youth Corps, based near downtown Colorado Springs. We provide team-based employment to young men and women ages 18- to 24 years old. These crews work on projects that include trail building and maintenance, noxious weed mitigation, rock walls and steps, fence construction, planting, erosion control, forest thinning, tamarisk removal, playground construction and many others.

The Corps serves communities within seven Southern Front Range counties, including: El Paso, Teller, Custer, Fremont, Huerfano, Las Animas and Pueblo County. MHYC-CS is the only youth corps accredited by the Colorado Youth Corps Association serving these counties.

MHYC-CS employs many different work crews annually. Each crew includes 8-10 trained Corpsmembers and an adult Crew Leader. Crews are equipped, trained, insured and ready to work. MHYC-CS provides transportation and the basic tools necessary for all projects. For more information on current crews, click here.

Colorado Springs Field Office History:

In response to numerous requests from community leaders, land managers and the Colorado Youth Corps Association (CYCA), a task force was established in 2004 to create a youth corps to serve seven Southern Front Range counties in Colorado. This task force garnered a planning grant from Great Outdoors Colorado and matching donations from several private and corporate foundations, including the Joseph Henry Edmondson Foundation. In the spring of 2005, the Colorado Legends and Legacies Youth Corps (CLLYC) formed. After a very successful launch and four years of operations, CLLYC merged with Mile High Youth Corps in July of 2009. This merger formed Mile High Youth Corps – Colorado Springs and allowed the organization to expanded services in the Southern Front Range area and increase the number of youth served in the years ahead.
