Project Sponsors: FAQs

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I haven’t had great results from youth projects in the past.  What makes MHYC different?

Nationwide, youth corps are considered among the top for youth employment. At the Corps, it’s no different. MHYC Corpsmembers are held to high standards for discipline, attendance and work performance. The adult Crew Leaders work closely with project sponsors to ensure that work is progressing on time and completed to the sponsor’s satisfaction.  In addition, MHYC’s program meets all accreditation standards for the Colorado Youth Corps Association and the National Association of Service and Conservation Corps. MHYC crews are known for their quality work consistently earning above average ratings on sponsor evaluations.

What are my responsibilities as a project sponsor?

MHYC treats every project as a partnership and will work closely with you to ensure a positive experience for everyone.  Your primary responsibilities include: providing a safe working environment for the crew, preparing an appropriate amount of meaningful work for the crew to complete, providing Crew Leaders with clear expectations and directions for the project and supplying all materials and supplies needed for the project.  (MHYC crews are equipped with most basic tools necessary to complete project work.)  Staff will work with you in advance to make sure that the proper equipment is available for your project.  MHYC integrates educational activities into all aspects of the Corps.  The Crew Leader may ask you for suggestions on appropriate educational topics related to your project.  Your input is greatly appreciated.

Am I responsible for insurance/food/transportation for the crew?

  • All MHYC staff and participants are covered under workmen’s compensation and liability insurance through Mile High Youth Corps.
  • Crews pack their lunches and water at MHYC before leaving for the project site. Camping crews stock food for their 10-day spike prior to arriving at the project site.
  • Day crews meet at a Corps facility at 7:30 am each morning. Crew Leaders transport the entire crew to project sites in MHYC vans.
  • Camping crews meet at an MHYC facility at the beginning of their spike. Crew Leaders transport the entire crew to project sites in MHYC vans.

When are MHYC crews available?

For the 2010 land conservation project season, MHYC will be operating seasonal crews from early June through mid-August and from mid-August through early November. The priority scheduling deadline for summer crews is February 28, 2010. The priority scheduling date for fall crews is July 1, 2010. Seasonal crew schedules may vary depending on the project but are typically Monday-Thursday 7:30 am – 6:00 pm including transportation time.

What do I need to do to make sure the project goes well?

Communication between your agency and MHYC is key in ensuring a successful project.  Critical issues to discuss in advance include:

  • Scheduling details: Dates, times, breaks, education time, etc.
  • Tools and supplies:  Make sure everything is there and ready to go when the crew arrives
  • Safety issues:  Safety is MHYC’s number one concern on any project.  Make sure to discuss any potential safety issues during the pre-project site visit.
  • Clear expectations: Be specific about all expectations you have for the project.  Make sure the Crew Leaders understand the project specifications or important details.  Give feedback in time for them to correct mistakes.
