- How old do I have to be to work at MHYC?
For full-time AmeriCorps positions you must be at least 18.
For summer positions you must be at least 16 for the Garden Crew and the Angler Education Crew. You must be at least 17 for the Colorado State Parks and Metro Area Service Crews and you must be at least 18 for the Summerbuild crews.
MHYC does not employ 14 & 15 year-olds.
- Where are you located? How do Corpsmembers get to work each day?
1801 Federal Blvd, right across from Mile High Stadium (on the #31 bus route.) Corpsmembers meet at our headquarters each morning at 7:30 and ride in vans to their community service projects. They return to headquarters at the end of each workday.
- What hours do you work?
We are a full time program. Our hours are from 7:30-4:30, Monday- Thursday and Friday from 8:00 until noon. During the Summer Program some crews work a 7:30-6:00 pm schedule and have most Fridays off.
- How much do you get paid and how often?
We get paid every other Friday. Wages and stipends vary by each program. See the AmeriCorps, Youthbuild and Summer Jobs descriptions for more details.
- How much is the scholarship?
The education award is through AmeriCorps and is based on the number of hours of service contributed to the community. Full-time AmeriCorps members serving for 11 months in the AmeriCorps Project will earn $4,725 for 1,700 hours of service. AmeriCorps members serving on the Colorado State Parks and Metro Area Service Crews will earn $1,250 for 450 hours of service. Youthbuild and Angler Education Crew Corpsmembers may earn $1,000 for 300 hours of service
The award goes into the Corporation for National Service Trust Fund in DC. When you decide to enter college or another educational program, the Trust pays your tuition directly to the school. These awards are considered taxable income and are good for 7 years.
- What kinds of projects do you do?
Most of our work is in the areas of environmental conservation and restoration (trail building, tree planting), community improvement (park clean-up, graffiti removal) and affordable housing (home construction, rehabilitation, minor repairs). We have worked with all sorts of organizations like Denver Urban Gardens, Colorado State Parks, U.S. Forest Service, Denver Public Works, Habitat for Humanity and Aurora Open Space. Our projects are very labor-intensive and physical in nature.
- Do you work outside if it's raining or snowing?
Yes, but only if it is safe. We generally continue working in the rain unless there is lightening or a severe storm. We try to schedule indoor projects during winter months to avoid working in the snow. Occasionally, it does snow in the spring and fall during our outdoor projects. In these cases, we continue working only if it is safe and productive. MHYC follows the same inclement weather procedures as Denver Public Schools (DPS) and is closed whenever there is a weather-related DPS school closure.
- Do you hire people who don't know how to do construction or build trails?
Yes. Most of our Corpsmembers don't have these skills when they start but learn them while serving here. We look for people that are not afraid to work hard, get dirty and care about their community.
- What do Corpsmembers wear to work?
You will receive an MHYC uniform when you start the program. The uniform consists of: t-shirt, BDU pants, sweatshirt, and baseball hat (full-time AmeriCorps members also receive a jacket & winter hat). You are required to be in uniform whenever you are working.
Protective Gear, hard-hats, gloves, and eye-protection are also worn on all projects. MHYC provides hard-hats and gloves. Corpsmembers provide their own eye protection. Eye-pro could be prescription glasses or regular sunglasses. Wrap-around glasses are recommended. Eye-pro must be approved my MHYC. These three mandatory protections stave off the majority of safety hazards found in our work.
Gear Corpsmembers Provide for Themselves
- Hiking or work boots that cover the anklebone and are approved by MHYC (no sneakers)
- A backback/bookbag (to carry layers, water, and lunch)
-Raingear/packable rain suit
- Thermal under-layers (We work outside in all weather conditions)
- How do I get a job at MHYC?
Fist, complete an application for the program you are interested in and return it to MHYC. If you are a qualified applicant, you may called in for a group interview. If you do well in the interview, you may be called back for an individual interview. The top candidates from these interviews are offered positions. All new Corpsmembers must complete an orientation and probation period.
