Mile High Youth Corps crews are fully insured, trained and supervised by on-site crew leaders. Crews are prepared with the equipment and tools needed for most projects and ready to complete high quality work. Mile High Youth Corps rates, on average, are a cost savings of nearly 20% when compared to typical contractor rates.

Join the Employer Advisory Council (EAC)

Industry partners, including 40+ private sector and nonprofits serve on the Employer Advisory Council. This council ensures MHYC career preparation aligns with industry-need and actively connects program graduates with employment opportunities. The EAC also provides opportunities for Corpsmember to take tours and participate in job shadows and internships.

FAQs

Youth corps crews are very different from contractors or professional work crews in that we do not commit to specific deliverables. We contract on a weekly basis and get as much work done as we can. Performance and productivity will vary crew to crew and year to year based on the experience level of the crew leader, work ethic/skills of Corpsmembers, etc. This could a Corpsmember’s first job or a Crew Leader’s first time supervising a crew. It is important to remember that we do not run professional crews. However, our Project Coordinators work with partners to set realistic expectations and goals for each project. For example, we will not commit to a certain linear distance of trail built or maintained in a week, but we will do our best to provide an accurate estimate and fulfill partner expectations and goals.

In the months or weeks prior to the project, you and a MHYC staff member will typically meet for a site visit where you’ll walk the site, discuss project objectives, determine logistics and identify any hazards. During the first few days of a project, it’s preferable to have a project partner on site or within close communication to the crew to provide feedback and troubleshoot any issues that arise. As the projects go on, less on-site supervision may be needed. Project partners are asked to complete evaluations at the end of each project. The feedback we receive from partners helps inform our trainings and leads to program and project improvements.

MHYC employs hand crews, chainsaw crews and pesticide application crews. Hand crews are equipped with a variety of digging, grubbing, shaping, hammering, spreading and cutting tools (full list available upon request). Sawyer crews run Stihl chainsaws and carry associated fuel, lubricants, parts and tools. A wood chipper is also available for rental on chainsaw projects. Pesticide application crews are provided with backpack sprayers, additional PPE and spill kits.
